Issues with Germany\u2019s railway lines and low water levels in the Rhine\nRiver are limiting the German government\u2019s ability to supply fuel to the\ncountry. This situation has led to price increases, according to Alfred\nStern, CEO of the Austrian oil and gas company OMV, on Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cLow water levels are becoming a problem, as they limit the\npossibility of transporting goods via waterways. There are also several\nrailway issues in Germany,\u201d said Stern. \u201cAll of this is constraining the\nsupply chain, which I believe is causing fuel prices, and specifically\nmiddle distillate prices, to remain at their current levels.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stern added that OMV supplies kerosene directly to Germany via\npipelines to Munich Airport to help meet the demand for aviation fuel in\nthe country.<\/p>\n
Services from the German railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, have been\nrepeatedly disrupted in recent months due to sabotage, and in June,\ntrains across the country came to a halt due to a communications system\nfailure. The operator is also known for frequent delays; Transport\nMinister Patrick Schnieder stated in March that these issues, alongside\noutdated infrastructure, could pose a threat to the nation\u2019s\ndemocracy.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water\nManagement reported on Wednesday that the logistical situation is\nworsening as the Rhine River\u2019s water level drops to its lowest recorded\npoint.<\/p>\n
