Raids on prostitutes<\/p>\n

On Dec. 1 at around 1 a.m. I saw several security officers of
\nthe city administration, accompanied by policemen, rounding up
\nprostitutes on Jl. Hayam Wuruk. Not many were caught on this
\noccasion, although, based on my daily observations, there are
\nmany prostitutes who roam this area, often in large groups.<\/p>\n
Perhaps on that particular morning, they had known of the raid
\nwell in advance, as many had gone into hiding. As a Muslim, I
\nconsider such raids very necessary, more so during the holy month
\nof Ramadhan. Although a bit late, it still gives the impression
\nthat the city administration is serious about eradicating immoral
\nbehavior.<\/p>\n
As a Jakartan, I suggest that such raids be conducted at least
\ntwice a week and the planning be kept secret so that a larger
\nnumber of prostitutes are apprehended. Searches should not only
\nbe carried out on the streets, but also nightspots in the area,
\nas it is common knowledge that prostitutes abound in these
\nplaces.<\/p>\n
The Taman Lawang area is also another eyesore at night. Some
\nof the transvestites in this location are so bold as to have
\nnothing on!<\/p>\n
