Rahim cleared of corruption charges<\/p>\n
MALACCA, Malaysia (AFP): A former Malaysian state minister,
\ncleared last year of a sex charge, was yesterday acquitted by the
\nHigh Court of two corruption charges involving two land deals.<\/p>\n
Judge Azmel Ma'amor acquitted Rahim Thamby Chik, former chief
\nminister of southwestern Malacca state, after public prosecutor
\nMohtar Abdullah withdrew the charges based on \"new evidence that
\nhad affected the prosecution's case.\"<\/p>\n
Rahim had pleaded not guilty to the charges of corruptly
\napproving in March 1989 an application of Syarikat Dayamik Sdn.
\nBhd. to convert land from leasehold to Malay customary land and
\nsubdivide them into two lots for business use.<\/p>\n
Rahim is alleged to have vested interest in the applications.<\/p>\n
The flamboyant Rahim, a former leader of the youth wing in
\nPrime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's ruling United Malays National
\nOrganization, was forced to quit as chief minister and all
\npolitical posts in October last year over allegations he had sex
\nwith a minor.<\/p>",
