Rafting c'ship to move to C. Java<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Whitewater Rafting Federation
\nplans to stage a national championship in March on the Serayu
\nriver, Central Java's longest.<\/p>\n
Amalia Yunita, the federation's chairwoman, told The Jakarta
\nPost yesterday that the organizers will limit the number of teams
\nto 30, each comprising five people.<\/p>\n
"We picked the Serayu because it's the most neutral place. In
\nthe 1994 championship, in Bali, participants protested the jury
\nwhen a team from Bali won," she said.<\/p>\n
"The Serayu is safe enough for a competition and it's not
\ninfluenced by the seasons," she added.<\/p>\n
The championships will feature three classes: speed, slalom
\nand rescue.<\/p>\n
"They all have to compete in the three classes, otherwise
\nthey'll be penalized," Yunita said.<\/p>\n
Yunita said that the championship is one way to attract young
\npeople to the sport.<\/p>\n
"The federation's main program for its first year, is to
\narrange and distribute safety codes, start coaching and
\nconsolidate commercial and non-commercial clubs," she said. The
\nfederation was established in March last year.<\/p>\n
The federation has five branches; in North Sulawesi, South
\nSulawesi, South Kalimantan, Jambi and West Sumatra.<\/p>\n
East Java, West Java, Bali and North Sumatra have also
\nproposed to set up branches.<\/p>\n
"But it's difficult to set up a branch in Jakarta because all
\nthe local whitewater-rafting activists are involved in the
