        "content": "<p>Rafting and camera damage<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks ago I received a report from one of the managers at<br>\nBJ&apos;S that we were having difficulties satisfying the requests of<br>\none of our clients with regard to a camera which was damaged<br>\nduring one of our rafting trips.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 10 years in Indonesia, our companies in Bali,<br>\nSulawesi and West Java have been responsible for taking well over<br>\n450,000 customers white-water rafting and we have a very simple<br>\nand smooth policy for damaged personal equipment, which is that<br>\non receipt of the guide&apos;s report, we reimburse the reparation, in<br>\nsome cases, the total cost of the camera. The US$50,000 insurance<br>\npolicy that we have is part of a moral and service obligation<br>\nwhich only covers personal injury.<\/p>\n<p>Before departure, in order to protect personal equipment, our<br>\nguides are instructed to inform clients of the procedures applied<br>\nto stop anything getting lost or wet on the trip. On this<br>\nparticular trip I ascertained from the reports obtained from my<br>\nmanagers that the dry bag which we utilized to secure Mr.<br>\nSchillinger&apos;s camera was insecurely fastened and the fault behind<br>\nthe damage lies with the guide and is therefore the company&apos;s<br>\nresponsibility.<\/p>\n<p>However, on this occasion, our manager contacted Mr.<br>\nSchillinger and over a three-day period the quotes for reparation<br>\nof the camera went from Rp 150,000 to Rp 280,000 to Rp 900,000.<br>\nObviously we requested the invoice from the shop at which the<br>\ncamera was to be repaired in order to satisfy ourselves that we<br>\nwere in fact paying for the reparation of the camera. Two days<br>\nlater Mr. Schillinger phoned, in what was only his second<br>\ncommunication with our office, with a rather threatening tone.<\/p>\n<p>I&apos;m sure that the readers understand that over the last decade<br>\nwe&apos;ve had numerous &quot;camera&quot; incidents. I would conservatively<br>\nestimate that 95 percent of all cases have been successfully --<br>\nfrom the customer&apos;s point of view -- followed up. This is despite<br>\nthe fact that it is usually the clients who have made the error<br>\nwith regard to securing their cameras in the watertight bags.<\/p>\n<p>As for Mr. Gentry, white-water rafting is a seasonal affair.<br>\nI&apos;m glad you enjoyed rafting with us last April. It is great fun<br>\nand extremely exciting. We have recently tried out and purchased<br>\na fleet of smaller boats much more suitable for the low water<br>\nseason. These boats run the lower water far more fluently then<br>\nwhen you took the trip on July 6, 1996.
