        "content": "<p>Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy\nAgency (IAEA) and a candidate for the next Secretary-General of the\nUnited Nations (UN), said in an article published on Thursday that the\ninternational organisation is increasingly losing relevance and slowly\nheading towards death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not see the UN in danger of dying in the near future\u2026 I see it\nmore as a kind of slow death. The UN has been moving towards\nirrelevance\u2026 without making a meaningful contribution to the recent\ncrises and wars between states,\u201d he told the Financial Times.<\/p>\n<p>Grossi spoke of a \u201csense of frustration\u201d over the poor results\nachieved by the organisation in various other areas, particularly social\nissues and efforts to combat climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the UN Security Council are conducting preliminary voting\nto select a candidate for Secretary-General and to recommend them to the\nUN General Assembly, which, under the UN Charter, formally appoints the\nSecretary-General.<\/p>\n<p>The second and final term of the current UN Secretary-General,\nAntonio Guterres, ends on 31 December 2026.<\/p>\n<p>On 31 July, the Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic\nof the Congo to the UN and President of the UN Security Council, Zenon\nMukongo Ngay, said that the first round of closed voting on the\nSecretary-General candidates had been completed.<\/p>\n<p>There are seven candidates running for the post: Michelle Bachelet of\nChile, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces of Ecuador, Rafael Mariano Grossi\nof Argentina, Rebeca Grynspan Mayufis of Costa Rica, Olara Otunnu of\nUganda, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana, and Macky Sall of\nSenegal.<\/p>",
