Radio, television stations urged to protect copyrights<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The dominant political organization Golkar
\nyesterday appealed to all radio and television stations to join
\nin the government's campaign to enhance copyright protection for
\nmusic works.<\/p>\n
Ais Anantama Said, head of Golkar's Department of Art and
\nCulture, said radio and television stations should refrain from
\nairing songs that are believed to be pirated works of foreign
\nartists.<\/p>\n
\"Copyright protection should not be limited to films only.
\nSongs should also be protected,\" Ais told Antara yesterday after
\nthe opening ceremony of a leadership training program for some
\n400 artists associated with the ruling organization.<\/p>\n
Attended by film and television artists, singers, songwriters
\nand comedians, the three-day course at Golkar headquarters was
\nopened by chairman Harmoko.<\/p>\n
Ais cited the example of the popular jingle Olee .. Olee which
\nhas now been widely copied by locals, either partly or in its
\nentirety.<\/p>\n
A number of artists have even created dangdut versions, he
\nsaid referring to a local style of popular music.<\/p>\n
The jingle is also widely used by television stations to
\naccompany their soccer programs.<\/p>\n
The practice, even if only a bar or two is stolen, is a
\ncopyright violation and a criminal offense, he said.<\/p>\n
The practice of copying popular foreign works also reflects a
\nlack of creativity, he added.<\/p>\n
\"I'm saddened every time I see or hear pirated songs being
\naired on television or radio,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He noted that the government is serious in its campaign to end
\ncopyright violations with Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono
\ncalling on the courts to mete out stiffer penalties for the
\nculprits.<\/p>\n
Responding to Ais' appeal, Jimmy Tingon of Sonora, a private
\nJakarta radio station, said he is very selective when choosing
\nIndonesian songs to be aired.<\/p>\n
Sonora allocates about 45 minutes each day for Indonesian
\nsongs and pirated works are regularly excluded.<\/p>\n
\"It's embarrassing and sickening,\" Jimmy said of the pirated
\nworks. \"It's simply a lack of creativity.\" (emb)<\/p>",
