Rachma, Amien visit Sukarno's grave<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: National Mandate Party (PAN) chairman Amien Rais and
\nPioneer Party chairwoman Rachmawati Soekarnoputri celebrated
\nPancasila Day on Sunday with a joint visit to the grave of her
\nfather and founding president Sukarno in the East Java town of
\nBlitar.<\/p>\n
The two have previously met several times, which may indicate
\na possible coalition between the two parties for the 2004
\nelections.<\/p>\n
Rachmawati has tended to make friends with those who oppose
\nher elder sister, President Megawati Soekarnoputri, including
\nformer president Abdurrahman Wahid.<\/p>\n
Amien said the visit had been planned for some time, and he
\ndid not deny the political motives behind the trip to Sukarno's
\nhometown.<\/p>\n
"We call on all Indonesians to reinstate the values of our
\ncountry's state ideology Pancasila," Amien told the press before
\nthe visit.<\/p>\n
Sukarno proposed Pancasila as the state ideology on June 1,
\n1945, but the national day has never been widely celebrated.<\/p>\n
Amien and Rachmawati watched the traditional puppet show,

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Cancer Foundation raised Rp 61.5
\nmillion (US$7500) from auctioning several items from the private
\ncollections of President Megawati Soekarnoputri and Yogyakarta
\nSultan Hamengkubuwono X on Saturday.<\/p>\n
At a gala dinner held in Yogyakarta, the foundation auctioned
\nwatches, photos and other belongings of the President to raise
\nfunds for the anti-cancer campaign in the province.<\/p>\n
The foundation raised Rp 50.4 million from Megawati's
\ncollection, Rp 7.5 million from the Sultan and Rp 3.1 million
\nfrom the sultan's wife Queen Hemas, organizer Ida Idham Samawi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
She added that the foundation also managed to raise an extra
\nRp 73.5 million in donations.<\/p>\n
Megawati contributed several wristwatches, clocks, family
\npictures and a signed biography to the auction, which was
\nattended by 500 guests comprising businesspeople and officials.<\/p>\n

JAKARTA: Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief Gen. Endriartono
\nSutarto visited Singapore on Sunday for a meeting with
\ncounterparts from six Asia-Pacific countries, an official report
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Singapore, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia,
\nAustralia and the United States, which was represented by its
\nPacific command, participated in the meeting.<\/p>\n
TNI said in its press release that the meeting, held at
\nSingapore's Shangri-la Hotel, was aimed at enhancing military
\nrelations among Asia-Pacific countries.<\/p>\n
The military chiefs also attended a security conference
\nsponsored by the International Institute of Strategy Studies

Students scold lackluster govt<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Hundreds of students and activists from Greater
\nJakarta rallied on Saturday to demand that the government improve
\nits performance.<\/p>\n
The rally started at the University of Indonesia campus on Jl.
\nSalemba and headed toward the State Palace on Jl. Medan Merdeka
\nUtara, both in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Some of the demonstrators demanded the resignation of
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri and Vice President Hamzah Haz.<\/p>\n
"The government of Mega and Hamzah has failed to fulfill their
\nmandate, as indicated by the country's deteriorating conditions,"
\nsaid Rudi Kartono, chairman of the Assyafiiyah University's
\nStudent Executive Board.<\/p>\n
Rudi said poor people in particular had suffered due the
\ngovernment's inability to control the prices of basic
\ncommodities, as well as fuel prices and utility rates.<\/p>\n
The students also condemned the repressive measures used by
\nauthorities against protesting students in some regions.<\/p>\n
