Racers cause Saturday night peril<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The number of amateur motorcycle racers in Tangerang
\nis on the rise, especially on Saturday nights, but local
\nresidents say Saturday night is not alright for the dangerous
\nraces.<\/p>\n
Residents have long complained about the noise and danger at
\nthe illegal racing circuits and are upset that the police do not
\ndo much to stop them.<\/p>\n
"We call upon the police to crack down on illegal racers
\nbecause they could kill people," Mrs. Saiman, 38, said on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
She added that there was an increase in the number of racers
\ngetting involved.<\/p>\n
The speed demons especially like to emulate Mr. Rossi on
\nBintaro Raya road in Pondok Aren, Jl. Belakang Citra Raya, Jl.
\nBeringin Raya and Jl. Samping Barat, Lippo Karawaci.<\/p>\n
Most of the racers do not wear helmets or other safety
\nequipment.<\/p>\n
The Pondok Aren police recently arrested some on Jl. Bintaro
\nRaya, but released them later.<\/p>\n
Tangerang Police chief Sr. Comr. Harry Prastowo promised that
\nstarting next week, the police would launch a massive operation
\nagainst everyone involved in illegal activities.<\/p>\n
"We will take stern measures against the illegal racers and
\nthey could be punished. If necessary, their motorcycles will be
\nseized and kept at our police station," he said without
\nelaborating on possible punishment.--JP<\/p>",
