        "content": "<p>Quick tax refunds promised<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government promised yesterday to pay a<br>\ncompensation of two percent interest per month if it failed to<br>\nrefund over-payments of tax within 30 days -- calculated after the<br>\ntax office receives a refund request.<\/p>\n<p>An expert advisor to the Minister of Finance on state budget<br>\naffairs, Mansury, said in a one-day seminar on tax that the<br>\npromise was in line with the amendments of tax laws effected<br>\nearly this month.<\/p>\n<p>He said that in return, a taxpayer is required to pay a<br>\npenalty of two percent interest per month if the amount of their<br>\npayment is less than it should be.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for a taxpayer to settle the tax difference is<br>\nset at seven days after they receive the demand from the tax<br>\noffice, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the government is committed to limiting the period of<br>\nits tax payment examinations to within a maximum of 24 months<br>\nafter the taxable year, far shorter than five years in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Mansury said the government will take strict measures against<br>\ngovernment officials involved in irregularities, with sanctions<br>\nincluding six months imprisonment and a fine of Rp 1 million<br>\n(US$454).<\/p>\n<p>The government has so far issued 47 new regulations, to<br>\nsupport the implementation of the new tax laws, to amend the old<br>\nones of 1984.
