Questions abound in Los Angeles murder case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): If Harnoko Dewantono, alias Oki, is the culprit
\non the Los Angeles triple murder, why didn't he move the three
\ndecomposed bodies from the storage locker?<\/p>\n
\"Perhaps he had a plan but had no chance of carrying it out
\ndue to the problems he faced when he returned here,\" a reliable
\nsource told The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n
Those problems include the confiscation of his original
\npassport by immigration officers, being blacklisted by the
\nAmerican embassy in Jakarta for alleged passport forgery, and his
\nmarriage, said the source, who asked not to be named.<\/p>\n
According to the source, Oki's original passport was seized by
\nimmigration officers in 1992 at the Soekarno-Hatta airport
\nimmediately after the officers saw that his passport had no exit
\nstamp on it.<\/p>\n
\"The officers took his passport because Oki could not answer
\ntheir questions on how he could go abroad without his passport
\nbeing stamped,\" said the source.<\/p>\n
\"We later found out that Oki had used the passport of his
\nwife's driver (when he had left for the United States in 1991)
\nwith his wife, Anggi Hasti Benjamin Yatim, known as Anggi, whom
\nhe had just married.\" he said. \"It is still a big question,
\nthough, how he could get into the United States without a valid
\npassport.\"<\/p>\n
Following his return to Jakarta in 1992, Oki again applied for
\na visa to the United States, but his application was turned down
\nby the United States embassy, which was aware of allegations of
\npassport forgery.<\/p>\n
\"Oki was also facing a serious problem with Anggi because her
\nfamily had not allowed her to live with him due to his brutal
\nbehavior,\" the source said.<\/p>\n
Oki's brutality<\/p>\n
Anggi married Oki in Jakarta in 1991 and divorced him in late
\n1992. They have one child.<\/p>\n
\"Anggi's family was very disappointed with Oki, especially
\nwhen her mother found many bruises on Anggi's body,\" the source
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Anggi was once treated at a Jakarta hospital for the mentally
\nill after receiving inhumane treatment from Oki, he said.<\/p>\n
According to the source, Anggi had been severely beaten by Oki
\nduring their stay in Jakarta and Los Angeles for unknown reasons.<\/p>\n
\"He sometimes forced Anggi to ask for money from her family in
\nJakarta as well,\" the source said.<\/p>\n
During a visit to Los Angeles in 1992, her mother accidentally
\nsaw bruises on Anggi's body and asked her daughter to immediately
\nleave Los Angeles and get away from her husband.<\/p>\n
\"But Oki insisted on joining the family and went back to
\nJakarta at that time too,\" the source said.<\/p>\n
The source said both Anggi as well as Oki's ex-girlfriend,
\nIpunk, had received poor treatment from Oki.<\/p>\n
\"Anggi, for example, had been beaten with a golf stick,\" the
\nsource said. \"Ipunk received more dreadful treatment from him but
\nrefused to disclose it to the press, only to the police.\"<\/p>\n
The source also said that the two visiting detectives from the
\nLos Angeles Police Department, accompanied by Jakarta detectives,
\nmet Anggi for questioning on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n
\"Actually the Los Angeles police officers have already
\nquestioned Oki, Ipunk and Anggi in Los Angeles,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Motive<\/p>\n
The bodies of Suresh Mirchandani, a man of Indian descent,
\nGina Sutan Aswar, an Indonesian woman and Tri Harto Darmawan
\n(Eri), Oki's brother, were discovered in August last year.<\/p>\n
It is strongly believed that the three victims were killed on
\nseparate occasions between 1991 and 1992. Earlier, many people
\nthought that Eri was murdered sometime in 1993, while Gina in
\nlate 1992 and Suresh in 1991.<\/p>\n
\"The dead bodies had been moved many times but Anggi, who
\nlived with Oki during that period of time, claims to know nothing
\nabout the triple murder,\" the source explained.<\/p>\n
Oki was apprehended in Central Jakarta on Jan. 7 on
\nallegations of passport forgery and was later questioned for his
\nalleged role in the murder.<\/p>\n
\"The motive for killing Suresh and Gina was purely money
\nreasons,\" the source said.<\/p>\n
According to the source, Suresh was killed when he asked for
\nhis money back from Oki, whom he believed had cheated him in the
\npurchase of a laundry business, which had been funded by Ipunk.<\/p>\n
\"Ipunk asked Oki to invest all her money in the business, but
\ninstead of buying the store in cash Oki bought it on an
\ninstallment plan and hired Suresh as its manager,\" he said.<\/p>\n
As the business ran well, Suresh purchased the store in cash
\nfrom Oki. After he found out that Oki had not yet paid for the
\nstore in full, he asked Oki to return his money.<\/p>\n
\"Gina was murdered after she told Oki that she needed all the
\nmoney back that had she lent to him,\" the source said, adding
\nthat he had no idea concerning the murder of Eri.<\/p>\n
\"If it was Oki, then only Oki knows what happened,\" he said.
