Questioning of Sjahrir on hold<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city police have temporarily ended the
\nquestioning of Sjahrir, one of the country's top economists, a
\nsenior officer said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Head of the Jakarta Police unit for special crimes, Lt. Col.
\nWinarno, said "the questioning of Sjahrir has been stopped
\ntemporarily, but we're trying to obtain further evidence."<\/p>\n
Winarno refused further explanation of the postponement.<\/p>\n
According to Sjahrir's lawyer Hendardi, from the Indonesian
\nLegal Aid and Human Rights Association, the police questioning of
\nhis client has been temporarily stopped due to a lack of
\nevidence.<\/p>\n
"Sjahrir was summoned today by the police but there was no
\nquestioning at all," Hendardi said at a media briefing at
\nSjahrir's house in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"Police only told us that they don't have or have not yet
\nfound enough evidence to charge him (Sjahrir) with criminal
\noffenses," the lawyer said.<\/p>\n
The police have questioned Sjahrir as a witness to alleged
\nviolations of the Criminal Code's Article 160 on agitation and
\nArticle 510 on public disorder, as well as the newly issued Law
\non Freedom of Expression.<\/p>\n
Sjahrir's summons on Monday was his second. He was first
\nquestioned last Tuesday.<\/p>\n
His lawyer claims the questioning of Sjahrir is a "bad
\nprecedent", as the police only named a witness to the alleged
\ncrimes without naming any suspects.<\/p>\n
"It's feared that police can easily summon any civilian
\nwithout the latter knowing what they are being summoned for."<\/p>\n
In the first summons, the police named Sjahrir as a witness to
\nthe massive student rally in front of the People's Consultative
\nAssembly building on Nov. 14.<\/p>\n
City Police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman told the media
\nat the time of the questioning that Sjahrir "attended the
\ngathering and even gave a speech in front of the building's
