Questioning of key abortion suspect to resume<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police resumed questioning yesterday the suspect
\nin the controversial abortion practices probe who attempted to
\ncommit suicide.<\/p>\n
City Police chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata said that Doctor
\nBudiman had recovered sufficiently to be interrogated again.<\/p>\n
"He seemed to be all right and ready to be questioned again.
\nWe have medics and psychologists on hand at the questioning
\nsession," he told reporters.<\/p>\n
Hamami said that it was fine for Budiman to ask for time to
\nrest during the sessions if he needed it.<\/p>\n
Budiman, an obstetrician and gynecologist, slit both wrists
\nwith a razor blade on Dec. 3 after getting permission from
\ninterrogators to go to the toilet during a questioning session at
\nthe City Police Headquarters.<\/p>\n
Budiman is one of 16 suspects, including another obstetrician
\nand gynecologist Lt. Col. Jaya Lelana who was detained by the
\nMilitary Police, who have been arrested on suspicion of being
\ninvolved in illegal abortion practices at two clinics, the Fajar
\nPengharapan and Amalia in Tanah Tinggi, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The doctor was rushed to the Dr. Mintohardjo Navy Hospital in
\nSouth Jakarta for emergency surgery and then moved to the Kramat
\nJati Police Hospital in East Jakarta the next day.<\/p>\n
Doctors at the Navy hospital warned their colleagues at the
\nPolice hospital to take special care of Budiman because of his
\ndepression.<\/p>\n
Doctors predicted that it would take ten days before Budiman
\nwould be ready to continue the questioning. But they did not dare
\nto predict the time needed for the doctor's mental wounds to
\nheal.<\/p>\n
Budiman's lawyer Ruhut Sitompul said yesterday that his client
\nwas still receiving medical treatment at the hospital.<\/p>\n
"His condition is getting better but he still needs medical
\nattention which he might not have if he were detained at the
\npolice station," he said.<\/p>\n
Ruhut said that Budiman still needed more attention,
\nespecially in connection with his mental state.<\/p>\n
"He is still depressed," he said.<\/p>\n
The head of the hospital had given the police permission to
\ncontinue the interrogation, he said.<\/p>\n
"Fortunately, Budiman was all right and calm during today's
\ninterrogation," Ruhut said.<\/p>\n
He said Budiman was taken to the police headquarters only for
\nthe questioning session and then driven back to the hospital.<\/p>\n
He said the interrogation started at around 11 a.m. and
\nfinished after 5 p.m.<\/p>\n
Hamami said his officers would continue their investigation
\ninto all the arrested suspects and look for more information from
\nwitnesses and experts to help clarify the case.<\/p>\n
"As to Budiman, we'll proceed with the investigation into him
\nas long as there are witnesses and sufficient hard evidence which
\ncan be used to prove his guilt," he said. (cst)<\/p>",
