Questioning of Dolog chief Zamawi continues<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city police continued questioning the city's
\nlogistics agency (Dolog Jaya) head, Ahmad Zawawi, on Tuesday
\nafter the latter vomited and requested an adjournment in Monday's
\nsession.<\/p>\n
Zawawi has formally been named the main suspect in illegal
\nrice transactions and rice exports.<\/p>\n
A police source said Zawawi entered the investigation room at
\nthe police's economic crimes unit at 8:50 a.m., accompanied by
\nthree lawyers from the law bureau of the State Logistics Agency
\n(Bulog).<\/p>\n
Head of the economic crimes unit Lt. Col. Saut Usman told The
\nJakarta Post the questioning was still underway at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
\"We gave him 38 questions, but he (Zawawi) didn't answer some
\nof them clearly and sometimes even refused to give any answer at
\nall,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, city police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman
\ntold reporters that there was no pressure put on Zawawi during
\nquestioning.<\/p>\n
Many people have speculated that Zawawi's case may be designed
\nto lead to an investigation into his superior, former Bulog
\nchairman Beddu Amang.<\/p>\n
Beddu was replaced last month after a three-year tenure. His
\nreplacement was in line with the government's program to
\nrestructure the agency, which is in charge of the procurement and
\ndistribution of basic commodities throughout the country.<\/p>\n
However, observers have speculated that Beddu's removal was an
\nindication of there being collusion in the awarding of Bulog
\ncontracts for importing basic commodities.<\/p>\n
\"Summoning others involved in this case will have to wait
\nuntil after we have the results of Zawawi's questioning,\"
\nNoegroho said, declining to reveal whether Beddu's name had been
\nmentioned by Zawawi during the interrogation.<\/p>\n
Zawawi was relieved from his post last week to help speed up
\nthe police investigation into his alleged wrongdoings.<\/p>\n
Dolog Jaya's acting head Saean Ahmad said on Tuesday that
\nDolog rice distribution would eventually be handled by
\ncooperatives and small-scale businesses.<\/p>\n
\"This measure is being taken to empower both cooperatives and
\nsmall-scale businesspeople as well as to reduce the number of
\ndelinquent distributors who have caused a commotion in rice
\ndistribution in the city, where a large amount rice intended for
\nmarket operations for the needy has gone missing.<\/p>\n
\"We believe the cooperatives still have a high moral
\nresponsibility in distributing rice,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Saean said that Dolog would discuss the matter on Thursday
\nwith the Jakarta offices of the Ministry of Industry and Trade
\nand the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small Enterprises.<\/p>\n
\"The important thing now is that people can get rice at a
