Quake cracks to be checked<\/p>\n
PADANG, West Sumatra: The National Atomic Energy Agency
\n(Batan) plans to inspect cracks which developed in high-rise
\nbuildings after a major earthquake shook western Indonesia,
\nincluding Jakarta, early last week.<\/p>\n
Antara quoted A. Djaloeis, the deputy chairman of Batan for
\nbasic research and application, as saying here yesterday that the
\nagency's nuclear technology, which uses gamma radiation, could
\ndetect cracks in reinforced concrete.<\/p>\n
The gamma ray is a type of electromagnetic radiation that has
\na shorter wavelength and higher energy than the X-ray.<\/p>\n
Jakarta, the western part of West Java and the southern part
\nof South Sumatra were rocked by a 30-second earthquake, measuring
\n6 on the Richter scale, Monday last week.<\/p>\n
The quake's epicenter was 33 kms beneath the Indian Ocean,
\nsome 300 kms southwest of Jakarta.<\/p>\n
There were no reports of casualties following the quake but
\nthe worst hit was the southwestern part of West Java where
\nseveral public facilities, including schools and places of
