PWI formalizes members' sacking<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The central board of the Association of
\nIndonesian Journalists (PWI) endorsed yesterday its Jakarta
\nbranch's decision to fire 13 of its members for joining the
\nunrecognized Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI).<\/p>\n
Chairman Sofjan Lubis, secretary general Parni Hadi and
\nJakarta branch chairman Tarman Azzam announced that the decision
\nwas taken after careful consideration.<\/p>\n
\"The PWI central board met several times to discuss the case,\"
\nSofjan said.<\/p>\n
PWI Jakarta dismissed 13 members last month for challenging
\nthe association after the government closed the Tempo, Editor and
\nDeTIK news-weeklies last year.<\/p>\n
The journalists, together with more than 50 others, signed the
\nSirnagalih Declaration in August that lead to the establishment
\nof AJI. PWI officials are angered by the declaration because it
\ncontains a passage denying PWI has the right to be the sole
\norganization to represent the journalistic profession.<\/p>\n
Most of those kicked out of were former Tempo journalists,
\nincluding Goenawan Mohamad and Fikri Jufri.<\/p>\n
Sofjan also called on editors to uphold the organization's
\ndecision, and not to employ the 13 as journalists.<\/p>\n
\"If we find that there are editors who still employ them, then
\nwe will reprimand them, or mete out sanctions if necessary,\"
\nSofjan said. \"However, I just hope that the editors will uphold
\nPWI's decision.\"<\/p>\n
Sofjan said the organization \"still has its door open\" if the
\n13 journalists wish to register as members. \"Certainly, they
\nshould meet requirements,\" Sofjan said. (swe)<\/p>",
