PWI defends journalist<\/p>\n
MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: The local branch of the
\nIndonesian Journalists Association (PWI) has filed a protest
\nagainst a police officer who reportedly threatened to shoot a
\nlocal correspondent in the head.<\/p>\n
Antara reported that Lt. Sud had allegedly threatened to shoot
\nSurya daily correspondent Hermansyah Pani while he was covering a
\ndemonstration here Wednesday.<\/p>\n
According to a report filed by Hermansyah, the police
\nlieutenant threatened to shoot him while he was taking
\nphotographs of the demonstration.<\/p>\n
\"If you take photos I'll shoot you in the head,\" Hermansyah
\nwrote in his report, citing Sud's threat.<\/p>\n
Despite having explained that he was a journalist, the
\nofficer, who was standing three meters away, took out his
\nrevolver and pointed it at Hermansyah.<\/p>\n
As cited in the report, several other journalists witnessed
\nthe incident.<\/p>\n
The association's secretary, Heri Suparman, said officers
\nassigned to the field should be briefed by their officers and
\ngiven a better understanding of the work of journalists.<\/p>\n
\"Security officers should not be arrogant in carrying out
\ntheir duty. We are all responsible in our different fields and
\none must respect the other,\" he said. (mds)<\/p>",
