Puteh case a test for anticorruption body<\/p>\n
Despite the differences between Megawati Soekarnoputri and
\nAmien Rais, the two have at least agreed on one thing -- the need
\nto suspend Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Governor Abdullah Puteh until
\nhe is cleared of corruption allegations.<\/p>\n
What is strange, however, is Minister of Home Affairs Hari
\nSabarno, who has requested that the Corruption Eradication
\nCommission (KPK) give Puteh more time to respond to the summons
\nhe was served. Even worse is Hari's request that Puteh's case be
\ninvestigated by only one body -- either the police or the KPK.<\/p>\n
Hari's requests are peculiar, first because the KPK is a
\nrelatively new body, which was established because of a feeling
\nof distrust toward the police and the prosecutor's office, and
\nsecond, because his move actually interferes with efforts to
\nuphold the law.<\/p>\n
A public official who has been named a suspect in a criminal
\ncase does not deserve protection. He should instead be removed
\nfrom his post, or even detained, to facilitate questioning.<\/p>\n
This is a significant test on whether or not the commission
\nhas the guts to investigate the corruption.<\/p>\n
