The commemoration of National Constitution Day must become a momentum\nfor evaluating and improving policies in the management of national\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year\u2019s Constitution Day must serve as a reminder for all\nelements of the nation of the importance of the legal foundation that\nhas led Indonesia to become a free and sovereign country,\u201d said Deputy\nSpeaker of the People\u2019s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat in\na written statement on Tuesday (18\/8), in commemoration of National\nConstitution Day every 18 August.<\/p>\n
According to Lestari, the ratification of the 1945 Constitution of\nthe Republic of Indonesia by the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian\nIndependence (PPKI) on 18 August 1945 was a historical milestone that\nlaid the foundation for the administration of the state.<\/p>\n
Rerie, as Lestari is affectionately known, argued that at the 81st\nyear of independence, the theme of a Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous\nIndonesia promoted by the government is in line with the ideals of the\nconstitution.<\/p>\n
However, Rerie said, its implementation on the ground still faces\nserious challenges.<\/p>\n
Based on the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) report for 2026,\nIndonesia\u2019s Democracy Index score has continued to decline over the past\nfour years, from 6.71 in 2022 to 6.37 in 2025, leaving Indonesia still\nin the flawed democracy category.<\/p>\n
A similar finding was also expressed in a report by the V-Dem\nInstitute, which places Indonesia in the electoral autocracy category\nand indicates that elections are not fully fair and that the political\nplaying field is unequal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is an alarm for all of us. Our constitution guarantees\nprotection for all citizens and mandates social justice. However, the\ndata shows that our democratic space is actually narrowing,\u201d said the\nmember of the NasDem Party\u2019s High Council.<\/p>\n
Rerie urged that the reconstruction of the constitutional design\ncontinue to be promoted to ensure that the presidential system with\nchecks and balances mechanisms truly comes alive in practice.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must ensure that existing policies genuinely help the state\ndeliver social justice for all the people, and that the fruits of\ndevelopment can be enjoyed by all levels of society,\u201d stressed the\nlegislator from Electoral District II of Central Java.<\/p>\n
In addition, explained Rerie, who is also a member of Commission X of\nthe House of Representatives (DPR), the public must continue to be\neducated about their constitutional rights and obligations, and\nencouraged to participate actively in overseeing the running of the\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
Amidst the various challenges in national and state life, Rerie also\nreminded of the importance of maintaining the spirit of nationhood above\nall differences.<\/p>\n
