Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that the rupiah breaching the Rp 18,000 per US dollar mark has not yet impaired the government's ability to service its debt, noting that most government bonds carry fixed-rate coupons. He acknowledged that the depreciation increases the rupiah cost of servicing foreign-currency-denominated debt, but maintained the exchange rate remains within the government's modelled range. Bank Indonesia separately confirmed it is intensifying market interventions to stabilise the currency.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that the rupiah exchange
rate breaching the 18,000 level has not disrupted the government’s
ability to repay its debt. Speaking to journalists at the Parliament
Complex in Jakarta on Thursday (4/6/2026), Purbaya explained that
government bond coupons are fixed-rate, meaning exchange rate
fluctuations do not have a significant impact on the principal.

However, he acknowledged that the weakening of the rupiah does affect
the payment of interest on government debt denominated in foreign
currencies. Nevertheless, Purbaya noted that the current movement of the
rupiah remains within the government’s calculated range.

“The coupons are constant. Debt repayment is made through these
coupons. It is only when the rupiah weakens that it increases the
payment amount in rupiah terms,” said Purbaya.

The government set an exchange rate assumption of 16,500 rupiah per
US dollar in the State Budget (APBN). Following the surge in fuel prices
due to geopolitical conflicts, the authorities had already conducted
simulations regarding the rupiah exchange rate.

While he did not detail the specific simulation schemes used, Purbaya
stated that the fundamentals of the rupiah are stronger than the current
level of 18,000 per US dollar. “In essence, the fundamentals of the
rupiah are below the current level. They are stronger than what we see
now,” he added.

Separately, Bank Indonesia (BI) has confirmed that it will continue
to intervene in the foreign exchange market with higher intensity amidst
the ongoing depreciation of the rupiah towards the 18,000 per US dollar
level.

Senior Deputy Governor of BI, Destry Damayanti, stated that the
central bank is also strengthening the interest rate structure of
pro-market monetary instruments to ensure domestic asset classes remain
attractive to capital inflows.

“Continuous intervention will be carried out consistently through
Non-Deliverable Forward (NDF) transactions in the offshore market, spot
transactions, and Domestic Non-Deliverable Forward (DNDF) in the
domestic market, accompanied by the purchase of government securities
(SBN) in the secondary market,” Destry emphasised.
",
