JAKARTA \u2013 Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has confirmed that\nthe budget for handling forest and land fires in Kalimantan is ready.\nHowever, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has not yet\nsubmitted its total funding requirements.<\/p>\n
Purbaya said the budget for forest fire handling will be channelled\nthrough BNPB. The agency currently has around Rp5 trillion in funds. The\ngovernment is prepared to add more should that amount prove\ninsufficient.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been asked, it will depend on BNPB\u2019s request. We will\nchannel it through BNPB. They have Rp5 trillion. If it is not enough, we\nwill top it up later,\u201d Purbaya told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday\n(26\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
According to Purbaya, the specific budget for forest fires cannot yet\nbe determined because the response is still ongoing. BNPB still needs to\nrecalculate requirements on the ground.<\/p>\n
\u201cBNPB has not given the total cost, so we do not know the figure.\nThis is still happening, they will reassess. But my estimate is that it\nwill not be as large as in Aceh, because Aceh was very massive,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Purbaya assured that budget availability will not be an obstacle to\naccelerating the forest fire response. \u201cOur money is always ready, it\njust depends on how BNPB runs the operation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
When asked whether the government is prepared to meet whatever amount\nBNPB requests, Purbaya said yes, with the caveat that the use of funds\nmust be accountable.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, as long as it is not marked up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Purbaya said disaster response takes a different approach compared\nwith ordinary government spending because it concerns public safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor disasters, the approach is different from ordinary spending.\nDisasters involve the lives of many people, threatening their\nlivelihoods. So we will take a different approach compared with other\nprogrammes,\u201d Purbaya said.<\/p>\n
