Pupuk Kaltim keeps title<\/p>\n
SURABAYA (JP): The pretournament favorite Pupuk Kaltim team,
\nled by world star Denny Sacul, retained the Pahlawan Cup bridge
\ntitle after beating the Sekayu team 51-28 in the final at the
\nSatelite hotel here Sunday night.<\/p>\n
Pupuk Kaltim, which also included world beaters Berce Polii
\nand Franky Karwur among its six members, lived up to its favorite
\nstatus once the two-day event reached the semifinals on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\"We found all the teams we encountered from the beginning of
\nthe qualifying matches Saturday tough squads to crack,\" said
\nDenny. He, Berce, Franky, Hengky Lasut and Eddy Manoppo have
\nhelped Indonesia dominate the Fareast Bridge Federation
\nChampionship several times in recent years.<\/p>\n
On this occasion however they had to compete against each
\nother as they were playing for their respective teams in what is
\none of the country's premier domestic competitions.<\/p>\n
It was clear from the first few boards of the final that
\nSekayu, which fielded a relatively inexperienced team, would have
\nto be content with second place.<\/p>\n
The Prasidha team, spearheaded by East Java's leading players
\nIndra Kusuma and Chris Patty, finished third.<\/p>\n
\"Considering that we were playing against such big names who
\nare ranked among the best in the world, I think it was a good
\nenough result for the Prasidha team to finish third,\" Mansjur
\nTandiono, the president & C.E.O of the Prasidha Group said.<\/p>\n
The group came to the rescue of the annual event after Mansjur
\nlearned the event was scrapped last year -- after 10 years of
\nsponsorship by PT Petro Kimia Gresik -- because no replacement
\nsponsor could be found.<\/p>\n
Mansjur said the Prasidha Group was honored when asked by the
\nEast Java branch of the Indonesian Contract Bridge Association to
\nbecome the major sponsor of the championships held in conjunction
\nwith National Heroes Day, November 10.<\/p>\n
After the inaugural event in 1983 was played in the Sidoarjo
\nregency, the competition folded for two years before Petro Kimia
\nstepped in 1986 and moved the venue to Gresik, an industrial
\ncenter close to Surabaya.<\/p>\n
As part of the Prasidha Group's sponsorship, the tournament
\nmoved to Surabaya itself.<\/p>\n
The widely diversified group runs the largest instant coffee
\nplant in southeast Asia in Sidoarjo, just outside Surabaya.<\/p>\n
The bridge championship is the second sporting competition the
\ngroup has sponsored. Last September it backed the Prasidha East
\nJava Open Golf Championship, held at Ciputra & Keluarga Golf
