Three hundred thousand hectares of forest in Sumatra and
\nKalimantan reportedly caught fire and the resulting smoke surged
\ninto the air. Even neighboring countries were affected.<\/p>\n
The burning of wood waste added to the thick smoke. The
\nperpetrators are none other than forest businessmen, or,
\naccording to Amien Rais, forest destroyers.<\/p>\n
The burning of waste yields smoke which is much denser than
\nthat emanating from forest fires. In answer to this, the
\ngovernment is planning to announce the names of the forest
\nbusinessmen (destroyers) who burn wood waste.<\/p>\n
The problem of forest fires -- with smoke also billowing from
\nwaste burning -- resurfaces every dry season. Steps against it
\nhave been limited to the planned announcement of culprits.<\/p>\n
Their action is far worse than that of thieves who, in olden
\ntimes, were condemned.<\/p>\n
The announcement of their names apparently is not just. But if
\nthey thought their reputation was important they would not act in
\nsuch a way. Their behavior causes great losses to the country.<\/p>\n
They do not deserve to live in this country if they cannot
\npromise they will not do it again.<\/p>\n
