Punish guilty bankers<\/p>\n
Rumors of misuse by ailing banks of the Bank Indonesia
\nLiquidity Aid (BLBI) have been circulating for some time. It was
\nonly yesterday (Tuesday), though, that the State Audit Board
\n(BPKP) reported finding evidence of such cases. Even though the
\nboard chief Soedarjono did not mention the names of the banks
\ninvolved, his statement naturally served to confirm those rumors.
\nThe agency promised to conduct investigation of those cases more
\nintensively. What was even more disturbing, though, was his
\nassertion that the money had apparently been used not only to
\ncover cash outflows during past runs on the banks, but to pay
\nbonuses to members of the banks' boards of directors as well, and
\nalso for derivative transactions and foreign exchange
\nspeculation.<\/p>\n
Naturally, if the board chairman's statement should be proved
\ntrue, it is unacceptable for owners of those banks to be allowed
\nto continue to operate as they do. We must support BPKP's efforts
\nto thoroughly investigate any cases that involve the misuse of
\nmoney belonging either to the public or the state. It would be
\ngrossly unfair to punish only ordinary pickpockets and robbers.
\nFelonious bankers must not be allowed to remain free while petty
\nstreet criminals are sentenced on the spot. Obviously it is
\nunthinkable to shoot culpable bankers on the spot, but stern
\nmeasures that are in proportion to their misdeeds must be taken
\nagainst them.<\/p>\n
