Puncak entertainment spots 'should be shut'<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Over 300 Moslem preachers and residents of the
\nmountainous Puncak area visited the local regency office in
\nCibinong Saturday, demanding the regent permanently close all
\nentertainment spots in their area.<\/p>\n
According to the protesters, the decision made by Bogor Regent
\nEddie Yoso Martadipura Wednesday to temporarily close the
\nestablishments dissatisfied them.<\/p>\n
Cucu, a Moslem preacher from Cisarua, said the authorities
\nhave yet to listen to the wish of the local people.<\/p>\n
\"Residents in Puncak living in the three districts of Cisarua,
\nCiawi and Megamendung strongly want the authorities here to close
\nforever all the disgraceful places in these areas,\" Cucu said.<\/p>\n
Another Moslem preacher, Syeikhan, from Megamendung, said
\nthose places were used as prostitution and drug trafficking dens.<\/p>\n
\"The government need not explain legal and regulation aspects,
\nwhich won't be understood by preachers. We just want those
\nestablishments closed,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Hidayatullah, from Ciawi, came with a different demand, urging
\nthe regency office not to extend the establishments' permits.<\/p>\n
\"We asked the regency not to renew their permits,\" he
\nproposed.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, regent Eddie said the temporary closure of the
\nentertainment centers at Puncak was meant to give operators a
\nchance to solve their problems with the locals.<\/p>\n
As Eddie was not in his office Saturday, the protesters were
\nreceived by the regency's spokesman, Jenner Simanjuntak, and
\nlocal council speaker, Eso Sukarso.<\/p>\n
Jenner said after the meeting that the demand of the local
\npeople would be submitted to the regent soon. His office would
\nalso hold a meeting with the operators soon to discuss the
\npeople's wish.<\/p>\n
\"The locals and operators are difficult to get together. They
\nare like oil and water,\" Jenner said.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of people stoned at least 12 discotheques on July 30,
\nin the long-running feud over the alleged immoral activities.
