Jakarta (ANTARA) – Pumpkin, a fruit often associated with Halloween
decorations, also offers a range of health benefits, from supporting eye
health and immunity to aiding digestion.

“Pumpkin is rich in fibre, vitamins A, C and E, minerals, and
antioxidants,” said nutritionist Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, who is based in
Charlotte, North Carolina, as quoted by Real Simple on Friday (23
October).

Pumpkin contains beta-carotene, a carotenoid that gives it its orange
colour and can be converted by the body into vitamin A. This nutrient
helps maintain vision, supports the immune system, and helps maintain
healthy skin and body tissues.

Its fibre content also supports gut and digestive health. One cup of
canned pumpkin contains about seven grammes of fibre.

Meanwhile, vitamins C and E, along with minerals such as copper, zinc
and iron, also support immune function. The potassium and magnesium it
contains are beneficial for heart and bone health.

“Pumpkin is an easy way to increase your intake of vegetables, fibre,
potassium and other micronutrients,” said LeRitz.

However, a sudden increase in fibre intake may cause bloating or gas,
particularly for people who are not used to eating high-fibre foods.

Nutritionist Joy Dubost, PhD, RD, cautioned people to pay attention
to processed pumpkin products. Pies, sweet drinks and pumpkin-flavoured
baked goods can contain high amounts of added sugar, saturated fat or
calories.

Fresh pumpkin can be made into soup or added to baked goods. Its
seeds can also be roasted into a snack containing magnesium and
unsaturated fats that are good for heart health.
",
