Pulogebang bus terminal project to begin soon<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Following the financial problems which have
\nbeset the appointed contractor, the city administration has
\ndecided to take over the planned construction of a new bus
\nterminal in the Pulogebang area of East Jakarta to replace the
\ncurrent overcrowded Pulogadung terminal.<\/p>\n
If everything goes well, the construction of the 10-hectare
\nterminal, designed to serve Jakarta commuters and intercity
\npassengers, will start sometime later this year and be completed
\nwithin three years.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Deputy Governor for
\nDevelopment Affairs Budihardjo Soekmadi said the city
\nadministration \"is still calculating the budget for the
\nconstruction of the terminal\".<\/p>\n
He, however, stressed that the project is quite urgent since
\nthe capital badly needs a new, comfortable intercity bus terminal
\nas soon as possible.<\/p>\n
\"The project was previously being handled by private
\ncontractor PT. Rodiol Eron, but since 1997 the company has been
\nclaiming that they can no longer afford to finance the project.<\/p>\n
So, we have to consider the possibility of taking it over and
\nbuilding the terminal from our own resources,\" Budihardjo stated.<\/p>\n
He said the city firstly needed some Rp 500 billion (US$57.5
\nmillion) to purchase the required land at the planned site in
\nPulogebang.<\/p>\n
\"However, we have to assess our financial capabilities first.
\nBut, since there have been no other private developers willing to
\ntake on the project, the city is under pressure to develop the
\nproject on its own,\" Budihardjo said.<\/p>\n
\"A decision has become very urgent as we can see that the
\npresent Pulogadung terminal is very chaotic, and we need to
\nimprove facilities for the general public,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Head of the City Land Transportation Agency (DLLAJ) Buyung
\nAtang said PT Rodiol Eron initially agreed in 1987 to build the
\nnew terminal under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) arrangement
\nwith the city administration.<\/p>\n
According to Buyung, the company had yet to sign any agreement
\nwith the city, but it had decided to buy some land at the site
\nbefore completely stopping its land procurement in 1997.<\/p>\n
\"The current land price in the area is Rp 35,000 per square
\nmeter and we only need some seven hectares of land for the
\nplanned terminal, the site for which in the Cakung-Cilincing is
\ncurrently standing vacant,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Located about 5.5 kilometers from the planned site for the new
\nterminal, the existing Pulogadung terminal stands on 3.3 hectares
\nand is divided into three sections, respectively for intercity
\nbuses, city buses and a center for road vehicle tests.<\/p>\n
Thousands of buses use the terminal every day. The terminal's
\nthroughput usually reaches its peak on major holidays, such as
\nIdul Fitri.<\/p>\n
\"The idea to build a new, more convenient terminal has been
\nfloated since 1981,\" Buyung explained.<\/p>\n
Buyung said the City Development Planning Board will be
\nassigned to calculate the budget required for the project and
\ndecide what to do with the present Pulogadung terminal.<\/p>\n
\"Maybe we can use the land as an industrial or trade zone, but
\nthat will be up to the board,\" he said. (dja)<\/p>",
