Public warned not to be complacent<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto told followers of all
\nreligions not to be complacent just because they have overcome so
\nmany difficulties.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the commemoration of Prophet Muhammad's ascension
\nat the Istiqlal Mosque on Tuesday evening, the President said no
\none should feel complacent when faced with success.<\/p>\n
The prophet's ascension is his night journey through the sky
\nfrom Mecca to Jerusalem from where he later proceeded to heaven,
\nascending to the divine presence.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said God Almighty tested Indonesians with both
\nsuccesses and failures.<\/p>\n
\"Expressing gratitude to God is important in the effort to
\ndeliver ourselves from the temptation to savor the fruits of
\ndevelopment as soon as possible,\" he told thousands of Moslems
\nwho crammed the main hall of the Southeast Asia's biggest mosque.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile Dr. Amin Rais, chairman of the Muhammadiyah
\norganization, said at the ceremony that the essence of the
\nnocturnal journey is the order the prophet received from God for
\nMoslems to pray five times a day.<\/p>\n
\"Daily prayer does not only function to protect Moslems from
\ndoing evil things but also boosts the sense of discipline of the
\nbelievers,\" said Amin, who is also the lecturer of the post-
\ngraduate studies at Gadjah Mada State University in Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Amin said a people who are highly discipline usually respect
\nthe value of time, have a work ethic and are mentally strong when
\nfacing challenges.<\/p>\n
\"On the other hand,\" he said, \"the absence of discipline will
\nmake the people irresponsible to God or their own community,\" he
