Public warned about questionable fund-raising<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police warned the public ahead of the 56th
\nanniversary of Independence Day to be aware of any questionable
\nfund-raising activities to celebrate the event that use the names
\nof former president Sukarno and his family.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam said on
\nSunday that there had not been any public complaints submitted
\nyet to police headquarters in relation to the warning, but there
\nwere strong indications that some people would try the ploy in
\nthe capital.<\/p>\n
"Principally, we have reason to believe that some groups and
\nindividuals are preparing to benefit from the annual celebration
\nusing the name of Pak Karno and his family members, including
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri," Anton said, adding that the
\ncriminals often claimed to be from a foundation.<\/p>\n
Anton said the groups or individuals would most likely sell
\ncalendars, posters and other memorabilia of Sukarno and his
\nfamily.<\/p>\n
He added that other groups would probably ask directly for
\ndonations for the establishment of schools or activities in
\ncommemoration of Independence Day.<\/p>\n
He suggested the public ignore any appeals made by groups or
\nindividuals who claim to have connections with Sukarno and his
\nfamily.<\/p>\n
"If they come to your door, politely turn down their requests
\nand if possible, take note of their address. The police are
\nexpecting the public to also report the incident to the nearest
\npolice station so that we can track them down and make an
\narrest," Anton said.<\/p>\n
He also said that Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Sofjan Yacob
\nhad instructed all police officers in Greater Jakarta to
