        "content": "<p>Public transportation vehicles down by 40%<\/p>\n<p>BANDUNG (JP): The number of public vehicles has plummeted by<br>\n40 percent in the last three years due to the lingering financial<br>\ncrisis to have hit transportation companies, according to the<br>\nAssociation of Land Transportation Owners (Organda).<\/p>\n<p>Dadan Irawan Sarpingi, chairman of Organda Central Board, said<br>\nhere on Tuesday that many transportation owners had failed to<br>\nafford to cover the repair costs for their damaged vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\"The price of auto parts is still high, despite the fact that<br>\nthe rupiah is now stronger against the U.S. dollar,\" Dadan said.<\/p>\n<p>\"Auto part shop owners usually claim that they bought items at<br>\nold prices when the rupiah was weaker.\"<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to be more economical, transportation firm owners<br>\nusually 'cannibalize' vehicle parts, according to Dadan. \"Non-<br>\nessential parts of vehicles are taken out for other needy<br>\nvehicles.\"<\/p>\n<p>Organda recorded in 1997 that there were 28,000 buses and<br>\n800,000 urban transit vehicles operating across the entire<br>\ncountry. \"Now there are only a total of 500,000 vehicles<br>\noperating, including bus and urban transit vehicles.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"The figure will steadily decrease by a further seven or eight<br>\npercent next year, unless the government takes prompt and<br>\neffective steps to help vehicles owners.\"<\/p>\n<p>Organda had asked the government and Commission IV of the<br>\nHouse of Representatives (DPR) on numerous occasions to pay more<br>\nattention to their lingering problems.<\/p>\n<p>\"But there have been no positive policies set by the<br>\ngovernment following the uncertain political situation. We want<br>\nthe government to provide us with subsidies.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"We don't want the government to increase transportation<br>\nfares.
