Public loses environmental case<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau Island: A legal foundation is planning to file an
\nappeal at the high court after losing a case against 10 firms
\naccused of being responsible for spreading haze in Pekanbaru city
\nbetween January and March this year.<\/p>\n
According to the lawsuit, the companies were to blame because
\nthey had allegedly cleared land through burning the forest,
\nproducing the choking haze. It was unclear why the court favored
\nthe firms in the case.<\/p>\n
\"The appeal will be filed quickly,\" said Hendrisya, the
\ndirector of Pekanbaru's Indonesia Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).<\/p>\n
The foundation lodged the class action lawsuit a few months
\nago with the Pekanbaru District Court along with three groups of
\npeople claiming to have suffered from the choking haze. The
\ngroups of people in question were parents whose children were
\ntreated at hospitals and school children who had to skip school
\nwhen the haze spread in the city between January and March this
\nyear.<\/p>\n
Haze has been an annual problems on Sumatra island and it has
\naffected neighboring countries Singapore and Malaysia. The
\ngovernment has taken several measures to combat the haze problem,
