        "content": "<p>PT Timah Tbk has stated it will take legal action following a protest\nby miners that resulted in the destruction and burning of a company\noffice in East Belitung. The move is a response to the damage to company\nfacilities, which the firm deeply regrets.<\/p>\n<p>PT Timah Operations Director Handy Geniardi confirmed the company is\npreparing an official report for law enforcement regarding the incident.\n\u201cWe have handed it over, and we will file a police report stating the\nconditions we encountered. We will report this to law enforcement,\u201d\nHandy said briefly while inspecting the damage.<\/p>\n<p>Bangka Belitung Islands Police Chief, Inspector General Viktor T.\nSihombing, also highlighted the violent incident. While acknowledging\nthat expressing opinions in public is a democratic right protected by\nlaw, he stressed that aspirations should be conveyed properly. \u201cIf\nexpressing aspirations does not comply with the law, there will be legal\nconsequences. Especially when there is destruction and arson,\u201d Viktor\nasserted. He added that the police will follow up on the incident by\ngathering evidence to determine who was involved in the criminal\nacts.<\/p>\n<p>Viktor also urged the people of Bangka Belitung to maintain peace and\nnot be provoked by outsiders. \u201cThe people of Bangka Belitung are known\nto be peaceful, please maintain that. At the very least, we can\nanticipate outsiders who might try to provoke,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The protest, held on behalf of the mining community, took place at\nthe PT Timah office and the Tin Ore Warehouse (GBT) in Lenggang Village,\nGantung District, East Belitung. According to information gathered, the\ncrowd began moving around 09:30 WIB towards the Lenggang Market area.\nThe protesters demanded an increase in the purchase price of tin ore in\nEast Belitung Regency. They also demanded that \u201cmeja goyang\u201d (shaking\ntables) outside of PT Timah\u2019s partners or collectors be allowed to\npurchase tin ore from the community.<\/p>\n<p>The situation briefly calmed when East Belitung Police personnel\narrived to mediate. However, because PT Timah representatives did not\narrive promptly to meet the crowd, emotions flared. The protesters then\nforced their way in and damaged buildings and several company vehicles.\nThe action continued to the Tin Ore Warehouse (GBT), located about 300\nmetres from the initial location.<\/p>\n<p>At around 14:00, PT Timah representatives finally arrived at the\nlocation and signed an agreement with the protesters. Following the\nsigning of the agreement by both parties, the crowd dispersed and left\nthe protest site.<\/p>",
