PT Texmaco hands over 50 trucks to Armed Forces<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed PT Texmaco Perkasa Engineering,
\na unit of the Texmaco Group, on Friday delivered 50 of the 1,000
\nPerkasa trucks the Armed Forces ordered from the company.<\/p>\n
The trucks, the first domestically manufactured heavy-duty
\nvehicles procured by the military, were handed over by Texmaco
\nGroup chairman Marimutu Sinivasan to Minister of Defense and
\nSecurity\/Armed Forces Commander Gen. Wiranto in a ceremony at the
\nArmed Forces Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian-made trucks will be used by the Armed Forces
\nand the National Police to maintain security during the June 7
\ngeneral election.<\/p>\n
Wiranto also received 50 hand-tractors from Texmaco which will
\nbe used in farming projects under the Armed Forces' civic work
\nprogram.<\/p>\n
\"We should feel proud of these products and congratulate
\nTexmaco for its impressive performance in developing a high-
\ntechnology industry,\" Gen. Wiranto said.<\/p>\n
This kind of industry, he added, would help spur Indonesian
\neconomic growth and increase international confidence in the
\ncountry's manufacturing capability.<\/p>\n
\"The high-technology automotive industry Texmaco is developing
\ngives us special pride because we should no longer rely on the
\nimport of such vital vehicles,\" Gen. Wiranto said.<\/p>\n
Also attending the ceremony were Minister of Trade and
\nIndustry Rahardi Ramelan, Governor of Bank Indonesia Sjahril
\nSabirin, State Minister for the Empowerment of State Enterprises
\nTanri Abeng and scores of other senior government officials and
\nmilitary and police officers.<\/p>\n
Sinivasan said Texmaco had forged agreements with 40 local
\ncomponent suppliers to produce the trucks, brand-named the
\nPerkasa.<\/p>\n
He said Texmaco also cooperated with several foreign
\ncompanies, including Britain's Leyland, Germany's MAN and ZF,
\nAustria's Steyr, the United States' Eaton and South Africa's
\nASTAS, in developing the truck.<\/p>\n
\"Around 75 percent of the trucks' components are manufactured
\nlocally. And this local content will gradually be increased to 90
\npercent by 2001,\" Sinivasan said.<\/p>\n
He added that Texmaco Perkasa also manufactured a wide range
\nof machines and tools for the textile, coal and sugar industries
\nat its industrial complex in Subang, West Java.<\/p>\n
S. Wairo, a director of the Texmaco group, said Texmaco was
\ncapable of producing around 50,000 Perkasas annually and would
\nsell the vehicles both on the local and international markets.<\/p>\n
Texmaco will offer the Perkasas for Rp 150 million (US$17,240)
\nper unit while the hand-tractors will be sold for Rp 12 million
\nper unit, he said.<\/p>\n
Texmaco began in the textile and garment industry in West and
\nCentral Java and has expanded into high-technology machinery. The
\ngroup also owns the country's largest integrated synthetic fiber
\nindustry and several garment factories in West and Central Java.
