PT Telkom plans to install radio telephone system<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta office of state-owned
\ntelecommunications company PT Telkom plans to introduce a radio
\ntelephone system on the city outskirts to help meet the sharply
\nrising demand for telephones.<\/p>\n
Outgoing office chief John Welly said yesterday that the
\nsystem would be introduced by the end of the 1996\/1997 fiscal
\nyear.<\/p>\n
\"The radio telephone system is designed to cater for areas
\nwhich have not yet been reached by Telkom's phone cable network.
\nIn the first stage about 70,000 radio telephone lines will be
\nprovided,\" Welly said.<\/p>\n
Welly explained that the radio telephones would be sold to
\ninterested customers and could be returned to Telkom, for use by
\nother customers, as soon as telephone cables had been installed
\nin the areas concerned.<\/p>\n
Welly said installing a radio telephone system was much
\nquicker than installing a conventional one. \"It takes only two
\nmonths to install the radio system, far less than the one-year
\nperiod needed to install telephone cable infrastructure,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He said the introduction of the radio system was expected to
\nboost the marketing of telephone lines. He guaranteed that the
\nsystem would not affect the marketing of similar radio telephones
\nby PT Ratelindo, a joint venture between the Bakrie Group and PT
\nTelkom.<\/p>\n
PT Ratelindo plans to install a total of 280,000 lines for a
\ndigital advanced mobile phone system in Jakarta and West Java
\nwithin the next three years.<\/p>\n
Welly was replaced as office chief by Bambang Riady Oemar
\nyesterday in a ceremony presided over by Telkom's president,
\nSetyanto P. Santosa.<\/p>\n
Speaking after the induction ceremony, Setyanto urged the
\ncompany's offices to aggressively promote the company's telephone
\nlines. He directed these comments at Jakarta which plays, he
\nsaid, an important role in the world.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta office's sales of telephone lines have been poor
\nduring the first three months of this year. Its performance in
\nthe development sector, by contrast, has been very good.<\/p>\n
Welly said that the main problem lay not in the marketing but
\nrather in the completion of projects.<\/p>\n
\"The demand for telephone lines on the city outskirts remains
\nhigh, but PT Telkom has not yet been able to meet it, because of
\nnon-technical problems,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta office plans to build 400,000 telephone lines this
\nyear, 80 percent of which will be sold to the public, he said.<\/p>\n
Welly urged the office to pursue a new marketing strategy,
\nfocusing on crowded areas, such as Jakarta's \"golden triangle\"
\nbusiness district.<\/p>\n
\"It is time to make customers, especially companies, install
\nadditional lines,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Besides the installation of Bambang as the new chief of the
\nJakarta office, Setyanto inducted Woeryanto Suradji as Bambang's
\ndeputy and Paminto Adji as head of the information system
