Established in 1988, PT. Monagro Kimia is a joint-venture
\nprivate company in Indonesia and a subsidiary of the Monsanto
\ncompany in the U.S. Established in 1906 as a life sciences

In Indonesia, PT. Monagro Kimia is a market leader in
\nagriculture herbicides, which are produced at its factory in
\nTangerang.<\/p>\n
Among its line of herbicides is Roundup (R), a water-soluble
\nliquid formulation of isopropylamine salt and N (phosphonomethyl)
\nglycerine, a systemic herbicide that has a very low toxicity and
\ndoes not persist in the soil; and Spark (R) and Polaris (R), both
\nsimilar to Roundup but improved sophisticated formulations with
\nfaster action in order to eradicate weeds.<\/p>\n
Roundup, Spark and Polaris are trademarks of Monsanto, U.S.
\nThese products are extensively used on plantation crops as well
\nas by smallholder farmers in order to prepare the land before
\nplanting.<\/p>\n
These products are produced in Indonesia under direct
\nsupervision of the Monsanto company in order to have as equally
\nhigh a quality as the product produced in the U.S. or other
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
\"In 1998, PT. Monagro's sales decreased about 20 percent but
\nthis year, sales seem to be growing strongly,\" said Hans Bijlmer,
\nPresident Director of PT Monagro Kimia. He added that Indonesia
\nshould focus on improvement of its agricultural sector by
\nembracing new technologies, which will increase agricultural
\nproduction and promote not only sufficiency but also exports of
\nagricultural commodities.<\/p>\n
