'PT KAI not to blame for railroad accident'<\/p>\n
PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: The state-owned railway company (PT
\nKAI) must not be blamed in the deadly collision between a coal
\ntrain and a Tasima Star 2000 intercity bus in Prabumulih, South
\nSumatra, on Sunday, a railroad official said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Basnawi, spokesman for Division III of the South Sumatra
\nRailroad, said that based on the Article 16 of Law No. 13\/1992 on
\nthe Indonesian Railroad Company, other vehicles have to give way
\nto trains passing through crossings.<\/p>\n
"We (PT KAI) must not be held responsible for the accident.
\nBut we will provide ex gratia payments for the victims'
\nrelatives."<\/p>\n
The coal train hit the bus at a railroad crossing in
\nPrabumulih.<\/p>\n
Eight people, including the bus driver, were killed and 26
\nothers injured in the collision.<\/p>\n
Muara Enim Police chief Adj. Comr. Budi Sardjono said that the
\nguard at the railway crossing failed to lower the crossing bar
\nwhen the train was approaching.<\/p>\n
Responding to this statement, Basnawi said on Tuesday that
\n"Even if the crossing bar was not lowered by the guard, that does
\nnot mean that highway users can ignore the possibility of a train
\napproaching. Moreover, there are traffic signs warning motorists
\nof the railroad crossing at the scene of the fatal accident."<\/p>\n
This was the second such accident in Muara Enim regency since
\nApril, when a similar incident killed one person. (33)<\/p>",
