        "content": "<p>PT Indosat to operate new telecommunication gateways<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Indosat will operate its new<br>\ninternational telecommunications gateways and earth station early<br>\nnext month.<\/p>\n<p>Indosat's president, Tjahjono Soerjodibroto, said here<br>\nyesterday that the Rp 100 billion (US$43.6 million) facilities,<br>\nincluded three gateways in Batam, Riau, Pantai Cermin, North<br>\nSumatra, and Banyuurip in Gresik, East Java.<\/p>\n<p>The earth station, which will be used for International<br>\nMaritime Satellite (Inmarsat) services, is located in Jatiluhur,<br>\nWest Java.<\/p>\n<p>The new facilities, as well as the new building of the<br>\nMinistry of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications, are among the<br>\nservices and assets of the ministry to be inaugurated by<br>\nPresident Soeharto on Dec. 6.<\/p>\n<p>Indosat currently operates four international gateways, six<br>\nearth station antennas, four submarine cable landing terminals<br>\nand five microwave links.<\/p>\n<p>\"The gateway in Banyuurip is prepared to facilitate<br>\ntelecommunications in the country's eastern provinces, including<br>\ncommunications to and from Kalimantan and Sulawesi,\" Tjahjono<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He said that by the end of 1996, the telecommunications<br>\nfacilities already having earth stations will be equipped with<br>\nsubmarine cables.<\/p>\n<p>\"So, the facilities can reach countries within the Asia-<br>\nPacific region,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Indosat will cooperate with telecommunications<br>\noperators from the United States, Brunei, Malaysia and Palau to<br>\nprepare the installation of the submarine cables from Surabaya in<br>\nEast Java to Brunei, Sarawak in Malaysia, Mindanao in the<br>\nPhilippines, Manado in North Sulawesi and Guam.<\/p>\n<p>The project may develop into a network starting from Japan and<br>\nreaching Malaysia, Singapore, Jakarta, Surabaya and then linking<br>\nup with Guam, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the project will likely start in 1997 or 1998.<br>\n(icn)<\/p>",
