PSSI questions Kurniawan and Yuniarto on drug use<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi (JP): Strikers Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto
\nand Yuniarto Budi from PSM Makassar soccer club underwent doping
\ntests conducted by a medical team from the Soccer Association of
\nIndonesian (PSSI) here on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The medical team -- comprising PSSI official in charge of
\nmedical affairs Sonny Tobing and second in command of PSSI's
\ndisciplinary commission Togar M. Nero -- also tested 23 players
\nof PSM and 15 players of Pelita Surakarta, Central Java, after
\nboth clubs competed in the Bank Mandiri national soccer league.<\/p>\n
After the urine tests, Kurniawan and Yuniarto were questioned
\non their activities at Weta Hotel in Surabaya prior to their
\nmatch against Petrokimia Gresik on April 11. PSSI has yet to
\nannounce the result of the tests.<\/p>\n
Kurniawan hailed PSSI's effort to fight drugs in sport. \"I
\nthink the urine tests will give local soccer a positive image,
\nespecially for me because I can prove to everybody that I do not
\nmisbehave,\" he told The Jakarta Post on Friday.<\/p>\n
PSM team manager Kadir Halid said his team did not expect the
\nmedical team to arrive on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"I was surprised when I saw Pak Sonny and Pak Tagor show up at
\nthe field before the match started. We didn't know their
\nitinerary or the purpose of their visit,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Kadir said he would not interfere with any decision made by
\nPSSI following the results of the tests.<\/p>\n
\"It will be up to PSSI to come to a conclusion. One thing for
\nsure is that Kurniawan and Yuniarto have given honest and
\nobjective explanations.\"<\/p>\n
Kurniawan and Yuniarto, who shared the same room at the hotel,
\nallegedly consumed shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) before
\nthe match.<\/p>\n
Another PSM player, Kuncoro, reportedly admitted on Wednesday
\nto taking shabu-shabu at the same time at the hotel. But he
\nrefused to implicate Kurniawan and a Persebaya player, Mursyid
\nEffendi.<\/p>\n
Kuncoro said in a written statement earlier that he was
\npersuaded by Mursyid to take shabu-shabu but Mursyid said it was
\nKurniawan who encouraged him to take the drug. Kurniawan has
\nrefuted Mursyid's statement.<\/p>\n
Kuncoro has been banned from playing in the current league
\nwhile Mursyid has been grounded and is waiting for PSSI to decide
\nhis fate.<\/p>\n
The PSSI official in charge of a special task force on drug
\nprevention, Adang Ruchiatna, said on Wednesday that the
\ndisciplinary commission should further investigate the case
\nbecause Kuncoro and Mursyid had given differing statements on
\ntheir activities at the hotel. (27)<\/p>",
