(PLDT) is eying an alliance with Indonesian,<br>\nSingaporean and U.S. firms for a US$900 million satellite-based<br>\nmobile telephone system in Asia, an official said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Ramon Cojuangco, president of the cellular phone firm Pilipino<br>\nTelephone Corp. (Piltel), said \"negotiations are still going on\"<br>\nand that details of the partnership still had to be finalized.<\/p>\n<p>Piltel is 40 percent owned by PLDT, the country's main<br>\ntelecommunications carrier. It is also the largest cellular phone<br>\noperator in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>Cojuangco identified the foreign companies as PT Pasifik<br>\nSatelit Nusantara (PSN) of Indonesia, Singapore Telecom,<br>\nSingapore Technology Ventures and Hughes Communication Inc. of<br>\nthe United States.<\/p>\n<p>A feasibility study of the project is expected to be finished<br>\nby next month, while the satellite is targeted to be operational<br>\nby early 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Cojuangco said the system would cover the region from India to<br>\nChina as well as the southern and southeastern parts of Asia.<\/p>",
