PSM defeats Persipura 3-0<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi (JP): Host and defending champion PSM
\nMakassar proved it deserved to gain the title last season as it
\nmanaged to upbeat Persipura Jayapura 3-0 in the kick off of the
\nseventh Bank Mandiri Indonesian soccer league (Ligina) at the
\nMattoangin stadium here on Sunday.<\/p>\n
PSM striker Miro Baldo Bento extended the pass from Carlos de
\nMello in the penalty box to the left side of the Persipura
\ngoalkeeper Fison Merauje to score 1-0 in the seventh minute.<\/p>\n
About 25,000 local soccer fans enthusiastically cheered the
\ngoal.<\/p>\n
Persipura, which has many young players in the team, tried to
\ncounterattack the PSM defense. Persipura rightwinger Ridwan Bauw
\nmanaged to reach the penalty area and kicked the ball real hard
\nbut it was too high over the PSM goal post.<\/p>\n
Heavy rain disrupted the match as the pitch turned to mud and
\nmade it difficult for the players to dribble the ball. PSM was
\nable to take advantage of the situation as they kept pressuring
\nthe match until Carlos managed to score the second goal in the
\n22nd minute.<\/p>\n
Eight minutes later, PSM striker Fouda Ntsama scored the third
\ngoal when he headed the pass from Carlo. The score remained
\nunchanged until halftime.<\/p>\n
In the second half, the Persipura players kept trying to
\nperform offensive playing. Persipura changed its formation a
\nsecond time but four chances to score made by Frans Youve were
\nsuccessfully blocked by PSM goalkeeper Hendro Kartiko.<\/p>\n
When referee Aries Munandar blew the final whistle, PSM
\nsupporters wildly greeted the opening victory in the league.
\nAries gave two yellow cards to PSM goalie Hendro and Persipura's
\nFrans.<\/p>\n
The Ligina kick off was officially opened by Soccer
\nAssociation of Indonesia (PSSI) chairman Agum Gumelar prior to
\nthe match.<\/p>\n
Twenty-eight horse riders, wearing Makassar traditional
\noutfits, entered the pitch carrying the flags of the league's
\ncompeting clubs.<\/p>\n
About 100 students from Makassar Football School gave a
\nperformance at the opening before they all ran to the side of the
\npitch and kicked balls to the spectators.<\/p>\n
Makassar mayor Baso Amirrudin accompanied by PSM patron Nurdin
\nHalid delivered the opening speeches regarding the preparations
\nfor the kick off ceremony.<\/p>\n
Agum expressed hope in his speech that the seventh league
\nwould be better than last year's. He also urged soccer fans to
\nsupport fair play both inside and outside the stadium.<\/p>\n
As Agum finished his speech, a giant ball was opened and a
