Provocateurs reported targeting Sumbawa town<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali (JP): Following their \"success\" in igniting
\nsectarian riots in Mataram, Lombok Island, provocateurs are now
\ntargeting the town of Dompu in neighboring Sumbawa Island, police
\nclaim.<\/p>\n
Chief of Dompu Police Subprecinct, Lt. Col. M. Atmaja Wiguna
\nsaid in a telephone interview that a group of unidentified people
\nhad recently tried to provoke racial discord among residents of
\nDompu.<\/p>\n
However their efforts apparently failed to incite unrest.<\/p>\n
\"The last effort was made on Feb. 10 at the Taropo
\nresettlement unit when three unknown people tortured a
\ntransmigrant named Danu, who hailed from Bali,\" Atmaja said on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Danu found a wounded goat on a roadside at noon, Atmaja said.<\/p>\n
\"Danu thought the goat didn't belong to anybody and so decided
\nto take the slain animal home. But a Suzuki van with three
\nunidentified men suddenly appeared. The three then stabbed Danu
\nin the head, legs and then rushed off,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Witnesses claimed to have seen the van speeding across the
\ntransmigrant complex heading in the direction of another
\ntransmigrant complex occupied by people from Bima in Taropo, some
\n64 kilometers northwest of Dompu.<\/p>\n
\"There news quickly spread that Bali transmigrants were
\nplanning to attack them,\" said Atmaja.<\/p>\n
According to Atmaja, the two groups of transmigrants were soon
\nriled-up to the point that they had formed a mob ready to fight.<\/p>\n
\"Fortunately police arrived in time and separated them, and
\nbriefed them that provocateurs must have tried to instigate a
\nracial clash in Dompu.\"<\/p>\n
Sources said that police have no record of the Suzuki minibus
\nused by the alleged provocateurs.<\/p>\n
\"That means it must belong to people living outside the
