        "content": "<p>Provincial council rejects Soewardi<\/p>\n<p>SEMARANG, Central Java: Central Java provincial council<br>\nfactions has called on outgoing Governor Soewardi not to<br>\nparticipate in the next gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n<p>\"We hope Governor Soewardi will wholeheartedly waiver<br>\nrenomination for the 1998\/2003 period,\" Col. Didi Soepardi of the<br>\nArmed Forces faction said here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Golkar faction chairman Mochammad Hasbi said the provincial<br>\nGolkar branch had ordered his faction to reject Soewardi's<br>\nrenomination for the next period.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker of the council, Alip Pandoyo, said many people in<br>\nthe province had voiced rejection of Soewardi's renomination.<\/p>\n<p>\"The council made the decision after consulting with<br>\nSoewardi,\" he said here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>A number of mass groups, including students, have aired<br>\nobjection to Soewardi's renomination.<\/p>\n<p>Soewardi's term of office will end in August.<\/p>\n<p>Pandoyo said the council had a list of 20 names of people who<br>\nwere suitable for the position.<\/p>\n<p>When asked to comment on the rejection of his renomination,<br>\nSoewardi said he had never voiced a desire to stand for the<br>\nposition again.
