Provinces have no say<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: The South Sulawesi province, like
\nother provinces in the country, has no bargaining power to press
\nthe central government to cancel its plan to raise fuel prices
\nand electricity rates, a legislature said here on Friday.<\/p>\n
Amin Syam, speaker of the South Sulawesi legislative council,
\nsaid, in response to students' demands, that what provincial
\nlegislatures could do was just convey the people's aspirations to
\nthe head of state, the House of Representatives (DPR) and the
\nMinistry of Mining and Energy.<\/p>\n
\"That's the most we could do,\" he said to reporters.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of students representing some 20,000 students of the
\nIndonesian Muslim University in Makassar protested the
\ngovernment's plan to hike fuel prices and electricity rates by
\nblocking the roads. They demanded that the provincial legislative
\ncouncil make an official recommendation to reject the plan.<\/p>\n
The House agreed on Friday to an average 30 percent increase
\nin fuel prices, while the hike in electricity rates is still
\nbeing discussed.<\/p>\n
The students, who on Thursday vowed to continue to block the
\nroads until the central government cancels its plans, did not
\nkeep their word following strong protests from the public.
