Provinces demand better chances for their shuttlers<\/p>\n
BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan (JP): Badminton officials from
\nout-of-Java provinces demanded better opportunities for their
\nshuttlers in order to catch up with Java-based players while at
\nthe same time admitting a wide gap of achievement between Java-
\nbased and shuttlers from the rest of the country.<\/p>\n
Interviewed separately on the sidelines of the Inter-club
\nNational Badminton Championship at the Hasanuddin HM Sport Hall,
\nthey told The Jakarta Post that their shuttlers basically had
\nsimilar skills but the lack of facilities and practice partners
\nhalted their chances of improving their skills.<\/p>\n
\"What we need are more national or even international
\ntournaments staged outside Java to encourage our shuttlers to
\ngain more experience by facing different types of players,\" said
\nHaruna Daeng Tayang of South Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
\"Makassar is ready to stage big badminton events such as the
\nIndonesia Open as we have all the required facilities.\"<\/p>\n
The organizing committee chairman, Lt. Col. Syahnan, had said
\nat Tuesday's opening that more events staged in provinces outside
\nJava would boost motivation to provincial shuttlers.<\/p>\n
Badminton officials also criticized the Badminton Association
\nof Indonesia's (PBSI) centralized way of managing the Indonesian
\nBadminton Center in Cipayung, East Jakarta, as well as other
\nlocal training camps.<\/p>\n
\"Why can't PBSI set up a training camp in Makassar for the
\nEastern Indonesian region? The camp could accommodate shuttlers
\nfrom all over Sulawesi, Maluku and Irian Jaya,\" Haruna said.<\/p>\n
\"PBSI has also never recruited shuttlers from the eastern part
\nof the country despite their good achievements. They should be
\ngiven special consideration without sacrificing any technical
\nrequirements.\"<\/p>\n
Haruna was referring to the case of Fitria Firdaus who was not
\ninvited to play at the World Junior Championships in Guangzhou,
\nChina, in November although she won the zone B badminton
\nqualification in Surabaya.<\/p>\n
Syahnan, vice secretary of PBSI South Kalimantan branch, also
\nsupported a more decentralized approach for non-Java-based
\nplayers.<\/p>\n
\"If there are already several camps in Java, why can't PBSI
\nset up another in Kalimantan. We can accommodate players from all
\nover the island.\"<\/p>\n
Lutfi Hamid, chairman of PBSI West Java branch, strongly urged
\nPBSI to give priority to the recruitment of shuttlers outside of
\nJava at the national center.<\/p>\n
\"As long as a shuttler is born or belongs to a branch of a
\nclub outside Java, he or she should automatically be admitted to
\nthe training center. It's burdensome to PBSI but they will have
\nto do it otherwise the gap will widen.\"<\/p>\n
\"A wide distribution of able shuttlers will eventually benefit
\nPBSI because it will create more competition than there is at the
