Proton to enter Europe<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian national car maker, Proton, said
\nyesterday it was appointing distributors in France, Germany,
\nBelgium and the Netherlands in a bid to penetrate the European
\nmarket.<\/p>\n
Britain is the sole Proton flag bearer in Europe at present,
\nmaking up 85 percent of the car's overseas market share.<\/p>\n
Jamil Jan, the chairman of Proton -- or Perusahaan Otomobil
\nNasional Bhd. -- said the company was finalizing the appointment
\nof national distributors in the four European countries where
\nsales were to be launched by year-end.<\/p>\n
Jointly produced by Malaysian parties and Japan's Mitsubishi
\ngroup, the Proton has cornered 74.5 percent of the local market
\nand was being exported to 18 countries.<\/p>\n
Proton has already invited auto firms in the United States and
\nEuropean auto firms to supply component parts for its future
\nmodels to reduce costs heightened by expensive Japanese parts,
\nofficials said.<\/p>\n
French auto group Citroen is the only western manufacturer
\nProton has so far identified for collaboration in engineering and
\nsupply for future models, but firms in the United States and
\nGermany were also being sounded out, they said.<\/p>",
