Protests greet Gus Dur in Bogor<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Hundreds of students greeted visiting President
\n'Gus Dur' Abdurrahman Wahid with protests on Wednesday demanding
\nthat the President pay better attention to agriculture and make
\nit a leading sector in the country's economy.<\/p>\n
The protesting students were only some 30 meters away from the
\nstage where the President gave his address at the opening of the
\nveterinary center at the Institute of Agriculture of Bogor (IPB).<\/p>\n
No violence was reported.<\/p>\n
The students, who insisted to talk directly with Gus Dur, also
\ndemanded that the President change his political attitude and
\nimprove his pattern of leadership. They also wanted the
\ngovernment to improve the life of traditional farmers.<\/p>\n
"It's Time for Gus Dur to Stop His Maneuvers Which Do Not
\nEmphasize the People's Interest. Stop Your Overseas Trips and
\nStart To Tour the Archipelago To See How Your People Are," some
\nof the banners they were carrying read.<\/p>\n
The students, who were reportedly from Jakarta, dispersed
\nquietly after Gus Dur refused to talk to them.<\/p>\n
The President said in his address that IPB must be able to
\ncombine traditional agriculture and technology. "It's a challenge
\nto the IPB academicians."<\/p>\n
Gus Dur also donated Rp 1 billion for the construction of a
\nstudent's dormitory after IPB rector Amman Wirakartakusumah said
\nin his report that the student's dormitory project had yet to be
\nrealized due to shortage of funds. (21)<\/p>",
