Protesters reject govt intervention<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java: About 100 students from various
\nprovinces demonstrated yesterday against government-sponsored
\nStudent Senates in their universities.<\/p>\n
They demanded that the senate be abolished and students be
\nallowed to revive the once powerful Student Council, which is
\nfree from external intervention.<\/p>\n
In the demonstration at Diponegoro University, they also
\ndemanded that students be given the freedom of organization as
\nguaranteed by the 1945 Constitution.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the demonstrators Ichwan AR said that students
\nfrom various universities across the country have formed a
\ncommittee to be in charge of preparing for the formation of
\nStudent Councils in their respective schools.<\/p>\n
The government banned Student Councils following the massive
\nstudent rioting in Jakarta in 1974, which was known as the
\nJanuary Calamity, in which demonstrators vandalized public
\nfacilities and burned cars. Some senior government officials were
