Protesters ransack WWF office in Bali<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Some 200 people protesting the ban on the
\nturtle trade ran amok here on Monday morning at the local office
\nof the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).<\/p>\n
Protesters ransacked the WWF office on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, with
\nsome spray painting the office while others threatened to burn it
\ndown.<\/p>\n
There was initially little done by security personnel to
\ndisperse the protesters and protect the office.<\/p>\n
A WWF employee at the scene told journalists that no one was
\ninjured in the incident, because all staff members were evacuated
\nprior to the attack.<\/p>\n
Some protesters said they were retaliating against WWF's
\ncampaign against the turtle trade.<\/p>\n
Environmentalists have expressed concern over the declining
\nnumber of turtles in Bali, as poachers continue to collect the
\nanimal's eggs, which have a high commercial value.<\/p>\n
They say the illegal trade in turtles over the past 10 years
\nhas accounted for the disappearance of about 15,000 turtles. (zen)<\/p>",
