        "content": "<p>Protesters go on trial<\/p>\n<p>DILI, East Timor: The trial of 12 people, detained since<br>\nJanuary for allegedly holding a pro-independence demonstration at<br>\nthe University of East Timor, commences today.<\/p>\n<p>The trial of another protester, facing the same charges, began<br>\non Tuesday. The protesters will be tried for the commission of<br>\nordinary crimes rather than, as previously expected, for<br>\nsubversion.<\/p>\n<p>Subversion is one of the most serious offenses under<br>\nIndonesian law. Those convicted may be punished with death.<\/p>\n<p>State prosecutor T.H. Panggabean told The Jakarta Post<br>\nyesterday that \"subversive people are those who undermine the<br>\nstate ideology Pancasila and commit political sabotage\".<\/p>\n<p>\"The protesters committed pure crimes,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The police said in January that the demonstrators on the<br>\nuniversity campus were not students, but people who used the<br>\ncampus to voice their political demands.
