Protesters demand Riau Islands province<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Dozens of women from the province of Riau protested
\nin front of the Ministry of Home Affairs here on Tuesday,
\ndemanding government approval for the establishment of a Riau
\nIslands province.<\/p>\n
During the rally, protesters carried a number of banners and
\ndistributed copies of a statement pledging loyalty to the unitary
\nstate of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The banners read, \"Ibu Megawati, our beloved president, please
\napprove the establishment of the Riau Islands province\"; \"The
\nRiau Islands province will stick to the Republic of Indonesia\";
\nand \"Riau State? No! Riau Islands Province? Yes!\"<\/p>\n
Dressed in Muslim attire, the demonstrators also asked Riau
\nGovernor Saleh Djasit to issue his recommendation for the setting
\nup of the new province.<\/p>\n
\"There is no need for Saleh Djasit, a true Malay son and
\nleader of the Riau people, to hesitate in giving his
\nrecommendation for the new province,\" said one of the
\ndemonstrators.<\/p>\n
After the rally the women proceeded to Merdeka Palace, where
